The difference between dreaming and doing

The difference between dreaming and doing

Let’s talk about dreams. Not goals, because when you say goal, that means you believe you can achieve it rather easily. But dreams. The dreams that keep you awake at night. They almost make your heart ache a little bit because you have this supernatural feeling that you need to achieve something, but you know the odds of it happening are pretty slim. Like playing in the NFL or taking part in the colonization of Mars… Do you have a dream in mind?

Now let’s talk about grit. Angela Lee Duckworth describes grit as “the power of passion and perseverance when it comes to long term goals.” Grit is the difference between a marathon and a sprint. Angela Duckworth left her full time job working as a business consultant to be an elementary school teacher. She noticed that the students that were successful weren’t necessarily the ones that had a high IQ, but the ones that worked extremely hard. They had the “growth mindset.” They understood that their learning abilities were not fixed. They knew that talent isn’t what makes you gritty.

Next, let’s talk about action. I once heard that if you do something, something will happen. Small actions add up. Running an extra mile makes you stronger. Making one more phone call helps you achieve more sales. Maybe these actions don’t add up right away, but they are what differentiates a person who will achieve their dreams from someone who won’t.

Dreams, grit, and action. To be great, you need to recognize that you are capable of anything (within reason… the NFL thing might be a stretch). Once you recognize your capabilities, you need to be willing to sweat and work harder than everyone else. Lastly, you actually need to do the work. Take little steps every day and if you’re gritty enough, you’ll see how they pay off.

If you want to get personal, my dream is to give a TED Talk. For those of you that know me, know that I am probably one of the worst public speakers EVER. Sometimes you just can't explain why you feel called to do certain things. What's your dream? Share it with us!
